Saturday December 17: This is gonna be one hell of a party.

To celebrate the end of a great year, and the final episode in our series of Hangar the Beetle shows, we’ve pulled together a line-up that promises smiles all round.

You’ll find us at Beetle Bar, on Roma st, Brisbane. Entry is $10, bar prices are cheap. Free festive cheer on entry.

We are also running our lofly store door deal! If you buy anything from www.lofly.com/store between now and 17 December, you will get half-price entry to the lofly Christmas Party! It’s a perfect opportunity to get some Nova Scotia vinyl or a Mr. Maps CD under the tree for that loved one with great taste. All you need to do is make a purchase and you’ll automatically go on the half-price door list!

Coming from Sydney is the slightly absurd but definitely brilliant Donny Benet. He is signed to the excellent Rice is Nice label, and he delivers smoothly gelled funk bass grooves and sweet soulful croonings the way only a sexy gent with receding hair and and a grand moustache can. It’s somewhere between Prince, bad karaoke and Everything is Terrible. Amazing.

If that’s not enough to pique your curiosity, we introduce Boss Fight. Celebrated Brisbane composer Thomas Green leads a team of talented musos and geeks who combine their love for live electronica and dubstep with their fondness for video game music. Previously they’ve played under the alias “Praxis Axis“, but their new creations are taking on a life of their own, enough to warrant a whole new identity for this band. Expect Nintendo nostalgia and uncontrollable dancing. Boss Fight will be opening so get there early!

In between we have a couple of Brisbane legends. Dot.ay is a unique mainstay on the Brisbane scene, and the city’s top chip-tunes pioneer. He uses gameboys and other bits of electronic oddities to create brutally ecstatic dance music. Dot.ay is gathering a serious following online and recently rocked the official afterparty of Tokyo’s Blip Festival – come and see what all the fuss is about.

He’ll be following a rare performance from M. O’Neill – an artist who seems to be talked about as much as listened to. Brisbane creative dilettante and Matt O’Neill (Citizen Loud, The Holy Cow) is setting out to explode the conventional understandings of what is meant by Australian hip hop. Think cut-and-paste beats, dense walls of sound, and sprawling rhyme-schemes.

You’ll find us at the Beetle Bar on Roma Street from 8pm, Friday 18 November, along with a general surplus of good times and some incredible music. Here’s what we’ve got:

Epithets
Epithets have now pulled together a couple of collections of literate indie pop with an eye on the trials of romance. Their recent release “Year of Glad” sparkles with focused power and beautiful instrumentation.

Extrafoxx
Frontman Conwae Burrell’s songwriting is a pure pleasure, quite literally. From guitar/synth pop, through alt country rockers and
beyond, Extrafoxx dishes up simple, hook laden genius, untouched, memorable and humble.

Nite Fields
New stuff, these guys take the epic MBV inspired wash of Loomer and channel it into neat packages of nearly naive pop. Nite Fields’ ability to explore many different aspects of their grand sound makes them one of Brisbane’s most exciting prospects.

Steven Francis
Steve is one of those lucky songwriters – he has a genuine voice. He’s a young Brisbane local whose songs will appeal to fans of Bigstrongbrute, McKisko and Tom Cooney. This is one of his first shows – come and say you saw him when.

There’s a facebook event here for that new age fun with a vintage feel.

Here’s what we’ve got for you:

Ponyloaf
One of Brisbane’s most underrated bands, Ponyloaf are guaranteed face-ripping synth-blast goodness. If you haven’t seen this band before, it’s a problem you need to fix, and H the B #04 is the perfect opportunity.

Novella Beggars
A bunch of young guys weaving beautiful layers of clean guitars reminiscent of the glory days of US emo, a la American Football, Pinback, Sunny Day Real Estate.

Sunshine Ensemble
Psychedelic indie six-piece of Flaming Lips-esque dreaminess with a reputation for great live shows.

Papperbok
Bizarrely eclectic rock from this young Brisbane 5-piece. Feelgood tunes with just enough of a cynical edge.

[ August 20, 2011; 12:00 am to 11:59 pm. ] Hangar the Beetle 03 - Tigermoth / Single Twin / aheadphonehome (Single Launch) / Sunshine State

Aug ’11

20

12:00 am

This month’s Hangar the Beetle sees lofly’s own aheadphonehome release the first single from their long awaited second album “Dream Reverb”, amidst a full line-up of highlights.

11.00 Tigermoth
Tigermoth’s Tim Paterson has wowed hangar audiences in the past with the precision and beauty of his beat making. With the 2011 release of a new album (“The 9th Tiger”), Tigermoth’s live set up has expanded to a three piece (featuring McKisko’s Kurt Read on drums). The band is in great form and scoring some great slots (eg Parklife, and supporting Del the Funky Homosapien).

10.00 Single Twin
Single Twin captures the homemade glories of Marcus Teague – front man of the much loved Melbourne band Deloris. Over eleven years Deloris carved out four albums of classic indie rock that could have only come from Melbourne. Single Twin’s debut album “Marcus Teague” (yes, that’s the right way around) tones down the fuzz and shines the light on a beautiful collection of songs.

9.15 aheadphonehome
In contrast, aheadphonehome’s new single “hunters compete” tones UP the fuzz. At a tidy, bouncy two and a half minutes, it’s a clearing in the wilderness of the strange and powerful new album “Dream Reverb”. This is the first show of a busy spring for aheadphonehome, leading up to a November album launch.

8.30 Sunshine State
This is lovely: free, washed out, naive indie rock that might be produced if long time hangar favourites Do the Robot and Loomer paired up to have a child. And that child saw a lot of sunshine.

You can find the FaceBook Event here.

[ May 7, 2011; ] On Saturday May 7th we're having a one off show at hangar.

May ’11

7

On Saturday May 7th we’re having a one off show at hangar. It’ll be a traditional hangar style show ie. BYO, loud, house party vibe, and sick music. We will only put on a few of these shows this year, so don’t miss out. In the name of good times, there is strictly limited capacity for this show. We strongly suggest you all pre-purchase a ticket through the paypal form at the bottom of this paragaraph OR simply click on the “store” above. If you don’t have a paypal account, you can also email us and we’ll send you our bank details. Tickets are $10.

If it doesn’t sell out, there will be a limited amount of tickets available on the door for $15. Doors are at 8pm. Music at 8:15pm until midnight. Bands playing are:

BLANK REALM

Having just returned from a US tour, Brisbane based BLANK REALM return to hangar after WAY too long. These guys cover a whole range of territory including Psychedelic, drone, krautrock, shoegazer, punk pretty much everything. Their Heartless Ark album of 2010 was released on cult US label Not Not Fun and feels right at home alongside labelmates Sun Araw, Pocahaunted, Ducktails and High Wolf amongst many others. One of our favourite bands on one of our favourite labels. (11:15PM)

LOWTIDE

Since coming together in 2009 as Three Month Sunset, Lowtide have continually reconfigured and redefined their sounds. The band recently traveled to New Zealand where they were invited to play two sets at the wonderful Campus a Low Hum Festival in February 2011, sharing the stage with the likes of Caribou, My Disco and Toro Y Moi, as well as playing at Applecore Backyard Festival.

The East Coast tour will prove to be a rare opportunity for fans old and yet to be indoctrinated to see Lowtide in 2011. These are the last shows for the remainder of the year, with the band secreting themselves away to write their debut album, set for release in 2012. (10:15PM)

FEATHERS

Total babes kicking ass and making fuckloads of lovely noise. Fresh from supporting Best Coast in March. Have also played with the likes of Dead Meadow and Fabulous Diamonds amongst many others. 9:15PM

SPUTNIK SWEETHEARTS

This “Mystery Band” is a long time hangar favourite. Right now their live show is WHITE HOT and we’re really excited to have them back. Have a newish 7″ record available. Interesting fact… these guys were the last non lofly records band to play at hangar last year. Hmmmm. (8:15PM)

May 7th: 151 Musgrave Road Red HIll. Tickets are $10 prepaid/ $15 on the door if any remain. BYO 18+ No physical tickets or PDFs required. Your name will go on a door list. Please bring ID.
